It’s official — Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is live. The build-up had been going for weeks: campaign early access that gave the series its best Steam reception in over a decade, then a pre-order run that pushed it to the very top of Steam’s best-sellers chart. Early this morning Infinity Ward finally opened the doors, and now the full game is playable on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2.

Jumping in today? Here’s the stuff that actually matters: what’s live right now, every multiplayer map and mode at launch, how the campaign is holding up, whether it’s worth your money, and what’s still on the way.

How Launch Day Unfolded

The announcement came from Infinity Ward itself. At 00:30 UTC on Friday the studio said it was opening Modern Warfare 4 early — and six minutes later, the official Call of Duty account told players the game was live worldwide. Short and sweet, no long countdown drama.

That moment closed out a staggered rollout that had been running all month. Digital pre-orders got campaign early access from October 16, DMZ early access followed on October 20, and multiplayer — the last piece — only opened to everyone today.

As we covered in our launch preview of Modern Warfare 4’s chart-topping Steam run, the game had already been sitting at No. 1 on Steam’s top sellers, knocking ARC Raiders off after its nine-week run at the top. Now, with launch day here, player numbers are expected to push well past the 108,500 concurrent Steam peak the game hit during campaign early access alone. That figure alone already beat Black Ops 7’s all-time Steam peak — and that was before multiplayer was even unlocked.

Modern Warfare 4 Multiplayer Maps and Modes at Launch

For most players this is the main event, because today is the first time anyone outside the beta has got their hands on it. Here’s the full competitive suite, now unlocked:

  • 12 Core 6v6 maps for the standard multiplayer rotation
  • 3 large-scale 32v32 Ground War maps
  • 4 dedicated 2v2 Gunfight maps
  • Kill Block, a brand-new modular battleground that reconfigures between rounds, with over 500 possible layouts and support for 3v3 and 10v10 Gunfight

Then there are three modes that are completely new. Inflation is the one that’ll mess with your head: the more cash you’re carrying, the bigger a target you become. Hijack is a one-spike attack-and-defend variant, and Collateral puts a pistol-and-buy-phase spin on Search and Destroy. Around those, the launch playlist still has the classics — Domination, Kill Confirmed, Free-For-All, Frontline and Search and Destroy — in Standard, Alternate and Hardcore variants, plus a Mobility Course if you want to learn the reworked movement system without getting shot at.

Two gameplay changes are worth flagging. Infinity Ward has got rid of hipfire bloom — that mechanic that punished your accuracy when firing from the hip — so close-quarters fights should feel a lot more reliable now. Movement has grown too, with the ability to hang and shimmy along edges and pipes. And for the small-map chaos fans: Shipment lands on October 27, just four days from now.

How Long Is the Modern Warfare 4 Campaign?

Short version: 16 missions, roughly six hours on a standard playthrough. If that’s not enough, there’s a post-campaign YOLO mode waiting after the credits — one life, no retries — and early finishers have already been grinding it, with the fastest confirmed clears taking around 20 hours of attempts.

Story-wise, this is the boldest the series has gone in years. No fictional battleground this time: Modern Warfare 4 drops you into South Korea after a North Korean invasion. You play as Private Park, a South Korean soldier fighting on collapsing front lines, while Captain Price runs a parallel storyline of covert operations half a world away. Along the way, missions also take you to New York, Paris and Mumbai.

Before release, that real-world setting got a mixed reaction. The player verdict since? Pretty emphatic. The campaign sits at a 93% positive rating on Steam from more than 4,700 reviews — the best a Call of Duty has managed on the platform since 2010. Critics are on board so far as well, with the game at an 84 on Metacritic and reviewers calling it one of the best CoD campaigns in years. One honest caveat, though: right now that Steam score reflects the campaign only, because multiplayer only unlocked today. Expect it to shift as the wider player base has its say. Some early players have also grumbled about the Call of Duty HQ launcher, which makes you boot the game through the franchise’s central hub.

Is Modern Warfare 4 on Game Pass?

No — and that’s a deliberate break from the last two years. Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 both came to the service, but Modern Warfare 4 is not on Game Pass at launch. Activision’s plan, according to the Call of Duty blog, is to bring it to the subscription in Holiday 2027. Want to play today? You’re buying it outright: $69.99 for the Standard Edition or $99.99 for the Vault Edition (around £70 in the UK).

Two more platform notes to know before you buy. Last-gen consoles are out completely — no PS4 or Xbox One version, and Warzone on those platforms winds down around Season 1. On PC, online play needs TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot switched on, and multiplayer and DMZ need a constant connection because of texture streaming.

Is Modern Warfare 4 Worth It in 2026?

Going on what we know so far: for campaign fans, yes, without much hesitation — 93% on Steam and an 84 Metascore add up to the best-received Call of Duty in well over a decade. For multiplayer fans, today really is day one, but the suite looks like the biggest and most balanced Infinity Ward has shipped in years. And DMZ coming back as a story-driven extraction mode gives the whole package a third pillar that previous entries just didn’t have.

Fair caveats, though. Multiplayer reception is still unproven until the servers properly fill up. The updated Warzone integration doesn’t arrive until Season 1. And Switch 2 players are getting the first Call of Duty on Nintendo hardware in 16 years through a native build — exciting, sure, but worth checking reviews on that platform before you buy. If Game Pass is mainly how you play and you can wait, Holiday 2027 is your date.

What Comes Next: Shipment, Warzone and Season 1

  • October 27: Shipment arrives — the classic small map, four days after launch
  • Season 1: the updated Warzone (with the new Hajin battle royale map) integrates with Modern Warfare 4; PS4 and Xbox One Warzone support ends
  • Beyond: Infinity Ward’s post-launch roadmap, which historically brings new maps, weapons and limited-time modes every season

There’s also a quiet tribute in the credits to Vince Zampella, the Infinity Ward co-founder who died earlier this year — a fitting note for the first Call of Duty built at Infinity Ward since his era, according to the game’s Wikipedia page.
